When Sunraysia Residential Services Inc. (SRS) was founded in 1976, the challenge facing people living with a disability was significant.
In short, there was little support available in the region to help them live an independent life.
What began as a grassroots community movement ultimately led to the opening of Sunshine House in 1977, creating the region’s first residential care home for people with an intellectual disability.
It represented a major step forward for inclusion and independence, providing individuals with a safe place to live, belong and thrive, with the organisation only growing and evolving over the next 50 years.
It’s growth and service that will be celebrated in October this year, with the organisation expanding far beyond its original purpose.
Today, SRS provides a broad range of disability, aged care, accommodation, youth and community participation services designed to support people through all stages of life.
These include specialist disability accommodation, in-home supports, skill development and day programs, social and recreational activities, support coordination, respite services, aged care support, youth programs and services and community participation programs.
The evolution of SRS reflects changing community expectations and major reforms across both the disability and aged care sectors.
Rather than delivering the same service model decade after decade, SRS has consistently adapted to meet emerging needs.
Residential care has evolved into contemporary housing options, while centre-based activities have expanded into purpose-built day programs.
Traditional support services are now enhanced by technology programs such as Unlimited, which provides participants with opportunities to learn, communicate and engage through digital platforms.
The expansion of aged care programs has been another significant chapter. SRS has continued developing services that help older members of the community remain independent, connected and active within their own homes and communities.
Programs such as CONNECT demonstrate the organisation’s growing commitment to tackling social isolation while supporting older residents to continue participating in community life.
The development of Benetook Farm has further strengthened this approach by creating a space where learning, creativity, skill-building and social connection come together in a real-world environment.
“While our organisation has grown and adapted to suit participant wants, needs and expectations, and industry and government reform, over the past 50 years, our purpose has remained the same – to create opportunities for people to live the life they choose,” SRS CEO Marian Luehman explained.
“Looking back, it’s remarkable to see how far we’ve come, from a single residential home established through fundraising efforts, to the largest provider of disability and aged care support in Sunraysia.
“The success of SRS has always come from listening to our community and responding to what people need.”
As SRS approaches its 50th anniversary celebrations this October, one thing is certain – the organisation remains guided by the same belief that inspired its founders in 1976, that every person deserves the opportunity to belong, contribute and live a meaningful life.
