Petition launched to address Fifteenth Street pedestrian safety concerns

Sunraysia Residential Services Inc. (SRS) has this week launched a petition calling on Mildura Rural City Council to prioritise the installation of a pedestrian crossing on Fifteenth Street, between Walnut and Deakin avenues, to address safety concerns.

This section of Fifteenth Street has become a busy and fast-moving road without a safe, designated crossing point for pedestrians to access Mildura Central or ALDI.

Existing crossings located on Deakin Avenue and Fifteenth Street both require pedestrians to cross near the busy Deakin Avenue roundabout or along Fifteenth Street between Deakin and San Mateo avenues.

A new, designated crossing on Fifteenth Street, between Walnut and Deakin avenues, would:

  • Improve safety for all pedestrians
  • Support independence for people with disabilities
  • Create a more accessible and inclusive neighbourhood

“With schools nearby and direct access to major roads, this section of Fifteenth Street has become increasingly dangerous for pedestrians — particularly people with disabilities, their carers, elderly residents, those using mobility aids, and residents who rely on safe daily access,” SRS Services Manager Bethany Simpson said.

“For some, this section is not just difficult to cross during peak periods of the day – it’s intimidating and unsafe. This is not simply an inconvenience, it’s a serious safety issue.

“Without action, the risk to our community, especially to those most vulnerable, remains unacceptably high. This is about community safety and accessibility for all.”

Mildura Mayor Cr Ali Cupper, who also holds Council’s infrastructure and assets portfolio, recently met with SRS during a Disability Advocacy session, where she heard first-hand about community experiences and concerns about pedestrian safety on Fifteenth Street.

As a result, Council has committed to assessing potential safety improvements, including collecting pedestrian crossing data.

However, there is no commitment to install a dedicated crossing at this point, with any potential upgrades to be considered in line with Council’s planning processes and available resources.

“While SRS welcomes Council’s actions so far as a positive first step, the installation of a crossing on this road is a must for our residents,” Miss Simpson said.

“Research consistently shows that pedestrian accidents are more likely to occur on high-traffic roads where there is a lack of safe crossing infrastructure.

“We encourage the community to get behind this petition to demonstrate just how critical these improvements are, while demonstrating to Mildura Rural City Council and decision-makers that a dedicated pedestrian crossing is the only practical, achievable solution that can make an immediate difference.”

Those interested in showing their support for safer streets can sign the petition at https://tr.ee/CrossingPetition or by visiting SRS’ 877 Fifteenth Street Consulting Suite.

Together, we can help prevent accidents and ensure everyone can move safely through our community.
